Ottawa Adding New Express Entry Points for Immigrants in ‘High-Wage’ Jobs
Applicants with a year of Canadian high-wage work or a qualifying job offer will get extra points as Ottawa eases hiring rules for employers.
On Friday, October 16, 2026, Immigration Minister Lena Diab announced new Express Entry points for high-wage job applicants, boosting permanent residency chances for skilled foreign nationals including doctors, engineers, and programmers.
Economists have urged the government to prioritize immigration for highly skilled workers such as nurses and engineers to fuel economic growth and plug labour gaps rather than focusing on unskilled roles.
According to the Immigration Department, high-wage occupations are defined as positions paying at least 1.3 times the national median wage, which is currently about $57,000.
Starting November 3, the government will remove the Labour Market Impact Assessment requirement for qualifying jobs, streamlining the hiring process for foreign nationals with Canadian work experience or job offers.
Diab is also expected to announce permanent and temporary resident targets for the next three years by the end of November or early December, further shaping Canada's immigration strategy.
