Brooklyn company recalls smoked seafood trio over possible Listeria risk
The voluntary recall covers 8-ounce vacuum-sealed packages, with no illnesses reported and customers told to stop selling the product immediately.
On Friday, October 9, Brooklyn-based wholesale distributor Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. issued a voluntary recall for 8-ounce packages of Starfish Seafood Trio due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets inspectors identified the contamination risk, prompting the recall because cold-smoked fish lacks a cooking step to destroy the bacteria.
The affected 8-ounce vacuum-sealed packages carry lot number D139149161-153 with an expiration date of December 1, 2027, distributed across New York, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
While no illnesses have been reported, Krasnyi Oktyabr urges consumers not to eat the seafood and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Listeria poses the highest risk to pregnant individuals, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, with symptoms potentially taking up to 70 days after exposure to develop.
