The Life-Changing Injury that Turned a Young Footballer Into an Actor
A teacher steered him toward drama after a broken leg ended his footy plans, and he later landed roles in five screen projects.
Samoan-Australian Actor Ioane burst onto screens six years ago in the hit show Bump, a comedy that debuted during COVID-19 and launched his career in the Australian entertainment industry.
Ioane's transition began after he broke his leg playing footy at 14, leading to a staph infection, three months in hospital, and eight surgeries that sidelined him from sports for two years.
Playing the lead role of Gomez in The Addams Family musical provided a turning point for Ioane. "That's when I truly fell in love with the idea of becoming an actor," he says.
Filming The Fall Guy in 2022 and 2023 with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt expanded his career to Hollywood; he stars in a new TV drama alongside British actor Anna Friel, premiering July 17.
In Canberra, Ioane maintains a comfortable life in Casey, where he moved for his final school years, keeping fit and waiting for new opportunities while unable to imagine living anywhere else.
