British involvement in Iran-Israel conflict could end up like Iraq War, MPs warn
UNITED KINGDOM, JUN 16 – British MPs warn that involvement risks a prolonged conflict like the 2003 Iraq War, urging caution amid escalating Iran-Israel tensions and UK military presence in the region.
On June 17, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy informed MPs that Israel had carried out widespread attacks against various Iranian locations amid rising tensions in the region.
The conflict follows unresolved tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, with the UK seeking to prevent Iranian nuclear capability through ongoing diplomacy and foiled Iranian-linked plots since 2022.
Lammy emphasized the UK was not involved in Israel’s strikes, urged restraint from all sides, announced support for British nationals registering with the Foreign Office, and highlighted rapid deployment teams aiding exits from Israel.
Lammy warned that no military action will end Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Britain remains a staunch ally of Israel, and echoed concerns about repeating the destructive 2003 Iraq War experience during debates over UK involvement.
The ongoing conflict threatens regional stability, risks wider escalation including U.S. involvement, and poses dangers to global trade and economy, with calls for cautious diplomacy continuing alongside military and humanitarian responses.
