Britannia Hotels in court after woman's wardrobe death
The prosecution says the hotel failed to secure wardrobes and windows, with charges also linked to a separate injury case involving a three-year-old girl.
On Thursday, Britannia Hotels Ltd appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court facing 20 health and safety charges brought by Liverpool City Council relating to multiple incidents at the Adelphi Hotel.
Charges stem from the 2022 death of Chloe Haynes, 21, found crushed by a wardrobe in her room. Police initially arrested three men on suspicion of murder, but investigations determined her death was accidental.
Additional charges include an August 2025 incident where three-year-old Valencia Verdin was injured by a falling cabinet. Allegations claim the hotel failed to secure windows and wardrobes across multiple guest rooms.
During Thursday's hearing, Britannia representative Keith Morton KC indicated the company would not enter a plea. District Judge Paul Healey adjourned the matter, transferring it to Liverpool Crown Court for a hearing on June 4.
Legal proceedings against the operator span from January 2021 to August 2025, addressing safety failures across multiple rooms. The Crown Court hearing on June 4 will determine how Britannia responds to allegations endangering staff and guests.
Chloe, 21, was crushed to death under a wardrobe during a night out in Liverpool.
The hotel where the woman was staying is being charged with failing to provide security – and appeared in court on Thursday.
– She was very kind, says her mother Nicola Williams according to The Mirror.
