Bristol Myers Buys Nvidia's Latest AI Computing System for Drug Research
The drugmaker said the system will expand AI work across its research unit and help screen dozens of drug candidates earlier in development.
- On Monday in NEW YORK, Bristol Myers Squibb announced it is purchasing the latest-generation Nvidia Vera Rubin computing system, becoming the first life sciences company to acquire an Nvidia DGX SuperPOD based on the new architecture.
- Greg Meyers, the company's chief digital and technology officer, said the investment addresses rapidly growing computing demands as Bristol deploys larger AI-enabled models across its research organization.
- The new system offers improved energy efficiency; "Think of it as 10 times more compute capacity per watt spent," Meyers said, noting that Electricity is not getting cheaper.
- Robert Plenge, chief research officer at Bristol Myers, said the capabilities allow the company to cycle through many more potential drug candidates, cutting development time by 20 per cent to 30 per cent.
- Gains in development time could reach 50 per cent in coming years, Plenge said, as this investment builds on a smaller SuperPOD system the drugmaker previously bought from Nvidia, which is now two or three generations behind Vera Rubin.
