Bride wins $4,300 judgment against Langley venue for wedding cancellation
The tribunal said the bride had a binding contract and added $3,987.50 in replacement-venue costs, fees and document expenses.
On Oct. 9, the Civil Resolution Tribunal awarded a bride $4,365 after her wedding venue in Langley Township, Latimer Rooftop, abruptly shut down without a business license.
Latimer Rooftop operated without a business license and was not zoned for "assembly use," preventing it from hosting events like weddings, the Township found after community complaints.
The bride booked the venue in 2023 but had to find a replacement just two and a half months before her wedding; the new space cost $7,350, more than double the planned price.
Andrea Ritchie, the tribunal's adjudicator, ruled the bride had a binding contract and ordered the venue's numbered company to pay damages; the tribunal dismissed the claim against Vesta Properties, finding it uninvolved.
The $4,365 judgment covers the price difference between venues, $50 in travel costs for her hairdresser, and tribunal fees, while Latimer Rooftop's Instagram account stopped posting in February and its website is now offline.
