Venables Pushing for Points After OC Change at Oklahoma, Doesn't Say if QB Switch Coming
Brent Venables said Oklahoma needs more touchdowns and better quarterback play after the Sooners ranked 111th nationally in total offense.
On Monday, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle following the Sooners' 42-25 loss to South Carolina. The offense managed only 118 total yards through three quarters on Saturday.
Oklahoma's offense has regressed significantly after reaching the College Football Playoff last year. The unit ranks 111th out of 138 FBS teams and averages 22.0 points per game, down from 26.2 points in the previous 10-win season.
Arbuckle arrived 23 months ago leading an offense centered on quarterback John Mateer. Mateer has completed 65.6% of his passes for 1,835 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions this season.
Tight ends coach Jason Witten was named interim offensive coordinator after previously serving as a high school head coach at Liberty Christian in Texas. Venables said "everything is on the table" regarding the quarterback position with a fresh slate for all players.
Venables emphasized winning over the next four weeks as the Sooners prepare for Saturday's game at Florida. The coach stated the team must score points "however you need to score, throwing it, running it, all of it.
