Cubs 3B Alex Bregman Sent to Hospital for Tests After Being Hit in Face by Foul Ball While on Deck
The Cubs said Bregman suffered multiple facial fractures but will not need surgery and could return for the postseason.
- Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman returned to the lineup on Friday, September 25, 2026, as the designated hitter against the Boston Red Sox, five days after sustaining facial fractures from a foul ball.
- During the fourth inning on Sunday, September 20, 2026, a foul ball off teammate Michael Busch's bat struck Bregman in the face while he stood in the on-deck circle, causing multiple facial fractures requiring hospital evaluation.
- To shield the injury, Bregman wore a specialized batting helmet featuring two protective C-flaps covering the left side of his face, a departure from the single-flap protection typically used by MLB players.
- Cubs manager Craig Counsell inserted Bregman as the designated hitter, allowing infielder Matt Shaw to maintain his role at third base while the team navigates the final regular-season series.
- Securing a postseason berth on Thursday, Chicago now shifts focus to the Wild Card Series starting September 29, 2026, banking on Bregman's presence to bolster the lineup for the upcoming playoff challenges.
