Navy Member Identified in Hidden Camera Scandal
Defence says the person of interest is assisting military police as the Navy keeps HMAS Leeuwin alongside for the investigation.
On Thursday, Defence confirmed an Australian Defence Force member is assisting the Joint Military Police Unit after a recording device was discovered on October 11 in a female bathroom aboard the Royal Australian Navy ship HMAS Leeuwin in Cairns.
Independent Senator Jacqui Lambie raised the issue in the Senate on Wednesday, revealing that concealed cameras were found in female shower facilities, which had prevented the vessel from sailing during investigations.
Navy Vice Admiral Matt Buckley labelled the discovery a "despicable betrayal of trust," announcing that Fleet Commander is undertaking a 100% audit of all bathrooms across the fleet.
Defence Minister Richard Marles condemned the incident as "reprehensible, invasive," while Opposition Leader Angus Taylor called it "utterly unacceptable" and Communications Minister Anika Wells described it as "horrible."
Lambie advocated for an independent body outside the ADF to investigate such matters, arguing that Defence must "clean up" its culture to protect personnel from similar breaches.
