Brazil detects Newcastle disease at turkey farm in southern state
- On Monday, Oct 19, Agriculture Minister Andre de Paula confirmed Brazil detected Newcastle disease at a turkey farm in Nova Itaberaba, Santa Catarina. Authorities closed the facility and suspended bird movement to contain the highly contagious, viral avian illness.
- Santa Catarina is Brazil's second-largest chicken supplier, accounting for roughly 23% of all exports through September 2026. The state's poultry sector is critical to Brazil, which holds the title of the world's largest chicken meat exporter.
- Sanitary authorities are monitoring approximately 133 properties in Nova Itaberaba and neighboring towns to prevent the disease's spread. Following the news, meatpacking shares declined, with MBRF Global Foods falling 4.1% in Sao Paulo.
- Export markets face potential restrictions, as Brazil previously halted shipments to China and the European Union following 2024 outbreaks. However, the Brazilian Animal Protein Association asserted there are no risks associated with consuming poultry.
- Acting Secretary for Agricultural Trade Rafael Requiao noted it is too early to provide concrete information on potential import suspensions. The Agriculture Ministry is maintaining dialogue with international health authorities to share relevant information regarding the outbreak.
