Boston Legacy explode late to upend Trinity Rodman, Washington Spirit
Aïssata Traoré and Amanda Gutierres scored after the 81st minute as Boston improved to 7-12-5 and handed Washington a 3-0 loss.
On Sunday, the Boston Legacy upset the second-place Washington Spirit 3-0 at Audi Field, scoring three goals in the final minutes to secure one of their best wins of the season.
Struggling in the standings with just six wins from 23 matches, the Legacy entered as 14th-place underdogs against the second-place Spirit before Aïssata Traoré broke the deadlock in the 81st minute.
In the 94th minute, Amanda Gutierres intercepted a pass from defender Tara Rudd and fired from 40 yards out with goalkeeper Sandy MacIver off her line, then added a second goal two minutes later from six yards.
Assistant coach Bárbara Reis reflected on the late-game strategy, saying, "We feel that the team that reaches that advantage first over the opponent, they feel more motivated." The win marked the Legacy's second straight road victory against a top-five opponent.
The Legacy will host the Houston Dash next Sunday at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket for their final home game of the inaugural season, with four of their five remaining matches on the road.
