Bolt, Nvidia to kickstart driverless taxi programme in Madrid during 2027

The pilot will use NVIDIA software and Lucid vehicles as Bolt seeks to scale autonomous ride-hailing across Europe.

  • On Wednesday, Estonian ride-hailing platform Bolt announced it will launch an autonomous driving program in Madrid, Spain in 2027, utilizing Nvidia's Alpamayo software to power at least 25,000 vehicles manufactured by Lucid.
  • Madrid serves as the pilot city because regional officials created a testing permit allowing limited commercial operations without full regulatory approval. The driving software runs entirely inside the car for cybersecurity, said Jevgeni Kabanov, President and Head of Autonomous Driving at Bolt.
  • The fleet features Level 4-ready Lucid vehicles equipped with Nvidia Hyperion, which combines reasoning AI with classical perception. "NVIDIA Hyperion standardizes the compute and sensor architecture across vehicle platforms," said Rishi Dhall, vice president of automotive at Nvidia.
  • Bolt will begin gathering real-world data next year using "tens of vehicles" in Madrid. Kay Stepper, President of Lucid Technologies and Chief Digital Officer at Lucid, called the collaboration "first steps toward bringing scalable, software-defined autonomous mobility in Europe."
  • Expansion plans target major French and German cities by the end of next year, while the company aims to deploy 100,000 autonomous vehicles across Europe and the wider UNECE region by 2035.
