Crews Recover Body of Missing College of Charleston Student
Owen Kenney, 19, was confirmed by Charleston Police to have died by suicide after walking on the Ravenel Bridge early Oct. 31, officials said.
- On Saturday, officers recovered a body in the water near Patriots Point and the Charleston County Coroner's Office confirmed it was Owen Tillman Kenney.
- Kenney vanished in the early hours of Oct. 31 after being seen by friends around 2 a.m. near the College of Charleston at King Street and Burns Lane and was reported missing on Nov. 1, prompting a multiagency search.
- Detectives concluded the death occurred on the Ravenel Bridge pedestrian walkway when Kenney died by suicide just before 4 a.m. on October 31, with his phone last recorded there shortly after 3 a.m.
- Authorities shifted from active search to recovery efforts as Charleston Police Chief Chito Walker thanked those involved, saying, `I would like to thank everyone who took part in the effort to get Owen back to his family`.
- Community leaders urged privacy while sharing crisis contacts as the College of Charleston said, `The College community continues to keep Owen and his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers` and officials noted, `Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline`.
