Blue Origin delays New Glenn rocket launch into January, FT reports

The revised timeline follows a May pad explosion that damaged Blue Origin’s launch site and delayed Amazon and NASA missions.

  • On Wednesday, CEO Dave Limp confirmed that Blue Origin delayed the return-to-flight launch for its New Glenn rocket to January 2027, Bloomberg reported.
  • The rocket was grounded after exploding on its launch pad in May, destroying the vehicle and badly damaging Blue Origin's only New Glenn pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
  • Rebuilding the pad took six months, with bad summer weather slowing the work; the delay also forces the FCC to cut Amazon Leo spectrum priority for the 48 satellites scheduled for launch.
  • This postponement complicates NASA's Artemis program plans to land astronauts on the Moon, as the Blue Moon lander relies on the New Glenn rocket to reach the lunar surface.
  • Returning the rocket to flight remains the top priority, Limp wrote in a memo, despite the firm's $130B valuation and mounting competition from SpaceX in the heavy-lift market.
