Serbia's police used teargas and crowd control vehicles on Friday evening in Belgrade to disperse anti-government protesters who threw firecrackers and flares at police officers in what is seen as a major escalation of the nine-month-long protests.
In Kneza Miloša and Nemanjina Streets, demonstrators attacked the police again this evening, throwing pyrotechnics and other objects at them. The police intervened and pushed them towards Slavija, and tear gas was also thrown.
People have been taking to the streets for more than nine months, demanding early elections and accountability from the authorities for the tragedy at the Navasadsky railway station, where 16 people died on November 1, 2024.

According to Reuters, this was a significant escalation in nine months of protests. In the center of the metropolis, demonstrators overturned and set fire to containers, and a tree was also set on fire, the agency added.
The situation escalated this week when supporters of the ruling party attacked protesters.
