WalletHub said the states lagged on workplace, education, health and political representation, with Utah scoring 32.18 out of 100.
- Utah ranked 50th overall in WalletHub's 2026 study on women's equality, while neighboring Idaho placed 47th in the national analysis of gender disparities.
- WalletHub compared 50 states using 17 factors across workplace environment, education and health, and political empowerment; the workplace portion accounted for 40% of each state's score.
- Hawaii earned the top spot because men and women experienced similar conditions across the workplace, education, and politics. Maryland ranked second, helped by the smallest gender pay gap in the country with women's earnings 1.4% lower than men's.
- "Ensuring women's equality requires more than simply giving men and women the same fundamental rights," WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo said. States must ensure women receive equal treatment in financial opportunities, education, and politics.
- The United States ranked 42nd out of 148 nations in the 2025 Global Gender Gap Index, reflecting persistent disparities. Women remain underrepresented in leadership, holding only around one-third of legislative seats and 35% of S&P 500 board positions despite comprising over half the population.
