Compensation Joy for Bereaved Families of Asbestos Disease Victims
Bereaved families will now receive the full award their loved ones would have been entitled to, ending a rule that cut payments by about £7,000.
On Saturday, October 31, the UK government ended a system that penalized bereaved families by providing reduced compensation for workers who died from asbestos-related diseases before filing a claim.
Decades of campaigning by the Asbestos Victims Support Group Forum UK pressured the government to overhaul outdated rules that forced families to accept around £7,000 less than the original claimants would have received.
Minister for Social Security and Disability Sir Stephen Timms called the update a "longstanding unfairness" fix, noting that dependants for a 60-year-old worker will now receive £56,656, up from £24,526.
Around 300 families across the UK are now set to benefit annually from this reform, which the government estimates will cost between £2 million and £6 million per year.
The Health and Safety Executive director Jane Lassey said the agency will "keep working with employers" to prevent future harm, while Northern Ireland's Department for Communities is expected to introduce similar changes.
