Beluga rescued from closed Ontario park dies in California
SeaWorld said the 9-year-old beluga stopped eating and showed intestinal dysfunction, and a full necropsy will determine the cause after his death.
On Sunday, SeaWorld San Diego reported the death of Cyprus, a nine-year-old male beluga that arrived on Aug. 22. The whale stopped eating on Friday, with an ultrasound revealing his intestinal tract was not functioning normally.
Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario, announced it lacked funds to care for its animals, forcing a mass relocation effort over the summer. The facility transferred 30 belugas and dolphins to aquariums across multiple countries to spare them from euthanasia.
Other relocated animals have also died, including Caspian, a 27-year-old female beluga at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium less than two weeks ago. Shedd also lost Peekachu and Rain, while Jelly Bean and Echo died at Oceanografic Valencia in Spain.
Remaining rescued belugas at SeaWorld San Diego are in stable health under close monitoring as they adjust to their surroundings. The facility stated, "Our commitment to the health, well-being and care of these belugas, like every animal we rescue, continues."
A full necropsy will be performed because belugas often mask underlying health concerns that are not immediately visible. Results will be shared with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration once the examination is complete.
