Court says overcrowding 'recurring, persistent problem' that Belgian state has known about for years
The Belgian State must reduce the occupancy of the Ghent prison to 110 percent of its actual capacity. This was decided by the civil court in Ghent. The State has six months to do so. If overcrowding persists after that time, a penalty of 500 euros per day per detainee will be imposed. The total amount of potential penalties has been set at 45 million euros. Minister of Justice Verlinden (CD&V) says she will study the ruling.
