Former Thorns Star Becky Sauerbrunn Returns to Portland as Technical Consultant
Becky Sauerbrunn will provide defensive expertise and veteran mentorship as Portland tries to close a 30-goal gap and climb the NWSL standings.
On Thursday, the Portland Thorns announced two-time World Cup champion Becky Sauerbrunn has joined the club as a technical consultant for the remainder of the 2026 NWSL season.
Sauerbrunn previously played four years for the Thorns, winning an NWSL Championship and an NWSL Shield before retiring in 2024, boasting a career spanning nearly two decades.
Working with head coach Robert Vilahamn, she will "bring meaningful defensive expertise and veteran mentorship" to the team through film study and video analysis.
The Thorns currently sit in fifth place with eight matches remaining; having conceded 30 goals in 22 games, the team hopes Sauerbrunn's addition strengthens their playoff position.
Portland Thorns president and general manager of soccer operations Jeff Agoos called the hire "a massive addition to our technical staff," as Sauerbrunn expressed excitement about supporting the team's championship run.
