‘Beauties and Beasts’ the Theme for Parksville Sand Sculpting Competition
The five-and-a-half-week event features 14 soloists and eight doubles, with concerts, fireworks and a People’s Choice vote.
The Parksville Beach Festival returns this July for five-and-a-half weeks of sand sculpting, featuring the "Beauties and Beasts" theme. Sculptors begin work on July 9, with the public exhibition opening on July 10.
Fourteen soloists and eight doubles from across Canada, the U.S., Colombia, the Netherlands, Czechia and Australia will compete in the Quality Foods Sand Sculpting Competition. Master judge Peter Vogelaar leads a panel of local award-winning artists evaluating entries blindly.
Entry to the exhibition requires a suggested $5 donation per person. Since 1999, the Parksville Beach Festival Society has contributed over $1,200,000 to the community, including approximately $75,000 annually to local volunteer groups.
Beyond the sand, the Tim Hortons Summer Concert Series runs Fridays and Saturdays starting July 17, while a new Sand and Sounds Weekend on July 25 and July 26 targets families with live music and crafts.
Festivities conclude with a Coastal Community Credit Union sculpture light-up on August 14 and August 15, followed by the Quality Foods Festival of Lights fireworks show on August 15. Blue Rodeo performs at the outdoor theatre on August 21.
