BC Hydro to triple size of its public EV charging network by 2035
The utility said the network will become one of Canada’s largest and include faster chargers and added amenities at busy sites.
- On Tuesday, BC Hydro CEO Charlotte Mitha announced a $700-million plan in Richmond to triple the province's public electric vehicle charging network by 2035, adding 3,500 new ports across British Columbia.
- Energy and Climate Solutions Minister Adrian Dix positioned BC Hydro as a reliability symbol amid global energy instability, citing some of the world's lowest electricity rates and stable supply as advantages over regions facing Middle East conflicts and oil disruptions.
- The new chargers will feature standardized designs with either 200-kilowatt fast chargers or 400-kilowatt ultra-fast chargers at high-use locations, supplementing roughly 8,900 existing public ports across British Columbia, of which 2,317 are fast-charging ports.
- Mitha said the expansion aims to give drivers confidence that fast and reliable chargers will be available wherever their journey takes them, while Dix noted British Columbians with electric vehicles can save substantial amounts of money daily, weekly, monthly and yearly.
- By 2035, the nine-year expansion will establish BC Hydro as a leading EV charging provider across Canada, positioning British Columbia to lead national electric vehicle infrastructure development.
