BBC Loses Rights to Broadcast Major Event for the First Time in 76 Years
TNT Sports will provide about 600 hours of live coverage, while Channel 5 adds free-to-air highlights after the BBC lost rights for the first time since 1950.
TNT Sports secured live rights to the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the BBC losing all broadcasting access for the first time since 1950. The event takes place in Glasgow, Scotland, this summer.
The BBC's bid 'was unable to match the financial offer from the market,' a BBC spokesperson said after losing live rights to TNT Sports in December. The broadcaster had held Commonwealth Games rights for 76 years.
Channel 5 will provide free-to-air highlights through a partnership with TNT Sports. Ben Frow, Chief Content Officer at 5, called the Games a 'standout event' for the network's summer coverage.
This marks the first Commonwealth Games held since Queen Elizabeth II's death and King Charles III's accession, with Glasgow welcoming 3,000 athletes from 74 nations to Britain.
Amid its Commonwealth Games loss, the BBC recently secured live coverage for Bundesliga football and the Women's Champions League, while sharing World Cup broadcasting rights with ITV.
