Base Mercedes-AMG EV Gets Fake Six-Cylinder Noises. V8 Sounds Cost Extra
On Thursday, October 22, 2026, Mercedes-AMG launched the updated 2027 GLS63, featuring a revised 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.
Engineers revised the V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft and integrated a 48-volt mild-hybrid system; the mild-hybrid motor supplements low-end power with 23 hp, enabling the 6,118-pound GLS63 to accelerate 0-to-60 mph in 3.9 seconds.
Inside, the GLS63 incorporates the Mercedes Superscreen, a glass panel housing three individual 12.3-inch displays; however, some controls remain touch-sensitive, creating usability frustration.
Priced at $156,800, the GLS63 competes with the Cadillac Escalade-V and features standard AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with active roll stabilization for handling performance.
Mercedes restricts authentic V8 engine noises to the GT 55 and GT 63 models, a decision Senior Editor Aaron Gold called unnecessarily exclusive despite calling the GLS63 "entirely excessive" yet "supremely fun.
Mercedes-AMG holds on to the V8 and makes it fit for stricter exhaust emission standards. In the GLE 63 S 4Matic+, the biturbo sounds like everything, just not like goodbye.
