LNG Traded by Singapore-Based Firms Usually Does Not Physically Pass Through Singapore, Says METI
Bahlil Lahadalia said 148 LNG cargoes sent to Singapore may have been traded onward as Indonesia cut pipeline gas exports for domestic needs.
- On Thursday, Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia alleged that Singapore resells some of the 148 LNG cargoes imported from Indonesia to other countries rather than using them domestically.
- This allegation follows Indonesia's Oct 24 decision to reduce pipeline gas exports to Singapore, diverting supplies to electricity generation in Batam, Bintan, and Sumatra to meet domestic energy needs.
- On Friday, the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry clarified that LNG traded by Singapore-based companies typically ships directly from source to destination, with more than 50 firms participating globally.
- Bahlil defended the reductions as within contractual limits, insisting, "Do not lecture Indonesia about its commitment to honouring and respecting contracts," while Prime Minister Lawrence Wong stated on Oct 25 that Singapore expects parties to honor commercial commitments.
- Despite these tensions, Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani affirmed that Singapore's investment commitments to Indonesia, which reached $17.4 billion in 2025, remain intact as both nations establish a joint task force to address transboundary haze.
