1,200-Mph F-35 Jets Gain 360-Degree Electromagnetic Threat View
BAE Systems said the deal covers 3 F-35 production lots and retrofits for older jets, but it did not disclose the contract value.
- BAE Systems will manufacture electronic warfare systems for F-35 Lots 20 through 22, the company announced on Oct. 6, in an order from Lockheed Martin that includes equipment to retrofit older aircraft.
- The AN/ASQ-239 suite provides pilots a 360-degree view of the electromagnetic battlespace, using passive, long-range sensing to help the F-35 detect threats without broadcasting its own signals.
- Scaling production, BAE Systems has delivered more than 1,500 electronic warfare systems, up from 1,200 in 2023, utilizing automation and the Digital Channelized Receiver Techniques Generator and Tuner Insertion Program.
- Amber Dolan, vice president of F-35 Solutions at BAE Systems, said the company has "continuously evolved our EW hardware and software to maintain our warfighters' decisive battlespace advantage." Software updates let operators respond quickly to new threats.
- These upgrades support the global F-35 fleet, flown by the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps, ensuring aircraft remain aligned as adversaries alter radar behavior or introduce new emitters.
