The race organizers have imposed restrictions on crossing the area classified as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO since 2009, a stage that has drawn protests from environmentalists and experts.
The stage of this Wednesday connects the Europarque de Santa Maria da Feira to the Alto Douro, on a route with a total of 132,6 kilometers. It has a brief excursion through Spanish territory and one of the new features of the 87th edition: the climb to Germil, in Ponte da Barca.
The NAP today asked the Ministry of the Environment to make available all the documents that served as the basis for the authorisation of the 7th return to Portugal by bicycle in Gerês, stressing that transparency cannot be optional.
Quercus contests the passage from Volta to Portugal through Mata de Albergaria, in the heart of Gerês, and alerts to a serious precedent in the management of the National Park of Peneda-Gerês. Environmentalist association calls for a change of course, maximum protection of biodiversity and dissemination of the technical and legal basis of the ICNF decision.
