Deaths reported after chemical tank implodes at pulp and paper mill in Washington state
An 80,000-gallon tank ruptured around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday at Nippon Dynawave Packaging in Longview, Washington, releasing white liquor and causing multiple critical injuries and confirmed fatalities.
White liquor, composed primarily of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide, is an extremely corrosive chemical used to break down wood in kraft paper production; the tank was roughly 60% full at rupture.
Ten people, including one firefighter and nine facility workers, were injured and transported to hospitals in Longview and Vancouver, according to Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein.
About 40 firefighters and paramedics, five fire engines and seven ambulances responded alongside a regional hazmat team; Gorsuch said the scene was stable with no immediate threat to surrounding areas.
The facility has operated since 1953 as a subsidiary of Nippon Paper Group with roughly 1,000 employees, though it faced regulatory fines in 2020 and 2021 for permit violations including wastewater discharge exceedances.
