ATV rider dies in crash in the hills above Peachland
RCMP say the 72-year-old rider was separated from a companion before the ATV left the trail and rolled down a steep embankment.
On Wednesday, July 29, a 72-year-old man died after his ATV rolled down a steep embankment near the former Gladstone Mine in Peachland, West Kelowna RCMP confirmed on Thursday.
After becoming separated from a companion on trails near Ponderosa Road, the rider's ATV left the path, travelled down an embankment, and struck trees, according to police.
Central Okanagan Search and Rescue deployed 16 volunteers, including a specialized ATV/UTV team, to assist RCMP and emergency responders in accessing the remote crash site.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene; Const. Ash Puri of West Kelowna RCMP stated, "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time."
BC Coroners Service is conducting an independent investigation into the fatality, while RCMP noted that neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be factors in the collision.
