Florida Sues NY Times over Alleged Anti-Israel Bias; Demands Internal Records
Florida says the Times’ repeated errors and alleged bias hurt shareholders and justify board-level oversight records.
On Wednesday, the Florida State Board of Administration filed a petition in a Manhattan court demanding internal New York Times board records to verify whether directors oversee adherence to editorial standards.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier launched the suit following a 28-page letter to executives questioning coverage accuracy, claiming the board failed to monitor internal controls regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
A whistleblower who flagged at least 15 instances of broken editorial standards is cited in the filing, alongside a study counting 72 recent admitted errors and a $9.25 million defamation verdict involving former University of Alabama basketball player Kai Spears.
Calling the litigation 'pretextual' and 'coordinated harassment,' The New York Times rejected the demand on August 21, while executive director Charlie Stadtlander vowed to 'defend against the suit vigorously.'
Joined by the National Center for Public Policy Research, the state argues it must protect assets for more than 1.2 million public retirees, contending that perceived journalistic bias poses a material risk to shareholder value.
