A technical error caused one cabin to strike safety barriers, injuring four people, while about 100 were evacuated by helicopter over three hours, officials said.
- On Tuesday, the Macugnaga cable car crashed near Moro Pass at about 11:30 a.m., injuring people and stranding around 100 on the mountain, who were evacuated by helicopters within three hours.
- Operator Filippo Besozzi said the crash followed a technical error as the ascending cabin failed to slow on entry, hitting a barrier and impacting the upper and lower station structures.
- Three passengers in the upper cabin and an operator at the lower station were injured, including a 59-year-old man and a child treated by an on-site doctor and nurse.
- The system, renovated in 2023 for �2 million, is under inspection after the crash, with Marco Gallo saying `I have already established the highest level of communication with the cable car operators and rescuers` as nearby ski slopes and the ski lift remain closed.
- Past deadly incidents, including an April crash that killed four and the 2021 Mottarone disaster that killed 14, frame the current scrutiny, with the latter prompting safety reviews.
