Asteroid set to be nearest to Earth since 1600s can be seen from Canada - National
NASA says the 700-meter-to-1.6-kilometer asteroid will not hit Earth and will be visible through telescopes from parts of Canada.
- On Saturday, June 27, asteroid 1997 NC1 passes Earth at 2.56 million kilometers, the closest approach in 400 years, according to the European Space Agency .
- The asteroid measures up to 1,650 meters across, roughly three times the CN Tower's height, and will not return this close to Earth until 2133, according to the ESA.
- Astronomers recommend a telescope with at least 100-millimeter aperture to view the object. White, a Canadian Space Agency astronomer, says these events provide "valuable scientific opportunities."
- The CSA confirms the asteroid poses "no risk" to Earth, while observers can locate it near the Ophiuchus constellation or watch livestreams hosted by the Virtual Telescope Project.
- NASA has designated 1997 NC1 as a "Potentially Hazardous Asteroid," while the CSA classifies such objects as a "minor planet" containing planetary elements but lacking formal planetary classification.
