Alter do Chão's agricultures challenge the government's decision because the space chosen for the 7,500-hectare shooting range has excellent agricultural land.
Location of the firing range in Alter do Chão was announced in March by Defense Minister Nuno Melo. "We find this option to come here strange, in this dimension [7,500 hectares], and there are no other areas that have been studied. Deep down, we are very concerned about what this may mean for the region", warns the spokesman of the newly created Association for the Future of the High Alentejo (APFAA)
The new Association for the Future of the High Alentejo (APFAA) is against the installation of the Portuguese Air Force Firefield in Alter do Chão, Portalegre district, and requires explanations to the State on the criteria adopted.
