As Okanagan College vacates, Revelstoke building gets more child-care spaces
School District 19 is converting former college rooms into child-care classrooms as the Revelstoke Child Care Society adds 12 more spaces.
After roughly 20 years, Okanagan College is concluding its lease at the Revelstoke Centre, returning the Farwell building to School District 19 and freeing space for 16 new child-care spots this fall.
SD19 Secretary-Treasurer Bruce Tisdale stated the district aims to recover revenue lost during the college's lease, noting the facility 'was serving the community' under OC but the board prioritized local needs.
The Revelstoke Child Care Society utilized $1.6 million in aid from the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund, Columbia Basin Trust, and SD19 to renovate three rooms for 12 infant and toddler spaces.
RCCS will host an open house on July 15 at 4:30 p.m. to showcase the new classrooms, with directors Linda Chell and Tracy Spannier stating the society is looking to expand services further.
Two other rooms previously occupied by OC remain available for community use as the college continues seeking rental spaces for future regional programming, with SD19 seeking operators for the remaining facility.
