A's Japanese Three-Way Prospect Shotaro Morii Finds His Footing in the Minor Leagues
The 19-year-old is building toward longer outings while batting .174 and learning to handle multiple roles in the Athletics' system.
Nineteen-Year-Old Athletics prospect Morii is developing as a three-way player—hitting, pitching, and playing infield for the Single-A Stockton Ports after skipping the draft in Japan to pursue a professional career in the United States.
Inspired by Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, Morii decided against specializing in one position; to adapt to life in the United States, he stopped using an interpreter to force himself to learn English.
Athletics manager Darryl Kennedy called the 19-year-old "very mature," as Morii pitches every Thursday while holding a 10.50 ERA and batting.174 with four RBIs for the Ports.
After rehabilitating a hamstring injury in Mesa, Arizona, Morii is refining his mechanics with hitting coach José Ortiz, who helps him navigate the demands of balancing multiple positions.
San Francisco Giants infielder Casey Schmitt noted Morii's growth at 19, and Giants manager Tony Vitello said, "In my experience it's been more the player," suggesting athletes will increasingly pursue multiple roles.
