OpenAI Employee Arrested for Listening Device Communicated with Saudi Royal, Feds Say

Prosecutors say Abdulrahman Alfozan used a hidden device to monitor confidential OpenAI meetings and exchanged messages with a Saudi royal about an AI job.

  • On October 9, Federal prosecutors arrested Abdulrahman Alfozan for attempting to intercept private conversations inside an OpenAI executive conference room using a concealed recording device connected to a USB port.
  • According to court filings, Alfozan exchanged WhatsApp messages with an unidentified Saudi royal throughout 2025 and 2026, with the royal writing in May 2026, "Saudi needs you more then the U.S.!" to which Alfozan replied, "100."
  • Following his arrest, a Saudi military member reportedly arranged travel to Doha for his wife, Lujain Alassaf, and their infant son, while prosecutors noted Alfozan had booked a one-way flight to Saudi Arabia for October 12.
  • Facing a maximum sentence of five years in prison if convicted, Alfozan was fired by OpenAI; attorney William Pernik requested release under home detention and GPS monitoring, arguing the trip was for family reasons.
  • The FBI continues investigating the case, which has drawn national security attention amid global competition over advanced artificial intelligence, though prosecutors have not identified the royal or established any direct link between the Saudi government and the surveillance operation.
