Germany Plans to Buy Four More TKMS Frigates

The decision gives the navy a single eight-ship class for anti-submarine warfare after Germany scrapped the troubled F126 program.

  • On Thursday, German lawmakers approved the acquisition of four additional MEKO A-200 DEU frigates from shipbuilder TKMS for $6.3 billion, bringing Berlin's planned fleet to eight ships.
  • Defence Minister Boris Pistorius cancelled the rival F126 project with Dutch shipbuilder Damen after the Defense Ministry cited 'considerable performance problems' for terminating the arrangement.
  • Damen is seeking $5.3 billion in damages, arguing the termination was politically motivated and legally unfounded, Der Spiegel reported last week. The F126 effort had already cost Germany more than 2 billion without delivering a ship.
  • These frigates will support NATO missions in the Baltic and North seas, the Atlantic, and the Arctic. The Defense Ministry expects the single-class fleet to simplify training, maintenance, and logistics.
  • Construction of the new vessels is scheduled for completion by 2035, with the first tranche operational by 2029. Operating costs for the four new ships are projected to reach 1.55 billion through 2045.
