Arizona Joins Lawsuit over Colorado River Water Cuts
Arizona says the federal plan could cut 760,000 acre-feet from its share and hit Central Arizona Project deliveries first.
On Friday, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs and the Arizona Department of Water Resources announced the state is joining Nevada's lawsuit against the U.S. Department of the Interior over the federal Colorado River water cutback plan.
State officials argue the federal framework unfairly penalizes Lower Basin states—Arizona, California, and Nevada—while requiring no mandatory reductions from Upper Basin states, which they claim violates the 'Law of the River.'
ADWR Director Tom Buschatzke warned the cuts could 'effectively dry up' the Central Arizona Project , a 336-mile canal system delivering water to Phoenix and Tucson, due to its junior water rights.
Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo and Southern Nevada Water Authority General Manager John Entsminger welcomed Arizona's partnership, calling it 'an important step in challenging a federal plan that unfairly burdens the Lower Basin.'
Despite the lawsuit, officials remain committed to finalizing a separate, voluntary Lower Basin agreement to reduce near-term demands on Lake Mead before Arizona's water reductions begin on January 1, 2027.
