Arizona Democrats lay out vision for new U.S. House cycle
Democrats say committee oversight will target the Trump administration and reverse tariffs, Medicaid cuts and health care changes after winning five of nine Arizona districts.
Arizona Democrats secured five of nine congressional districts, helping the party regain control of the House and Senate for the first time since 2022. The mood among winners in the 48th State is a mix of optimism and responsibility.
Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Phoenix, said Congress will prioritize oversight to hold the Trump administration accountable for the conflict with Iran and alleged corruption. Ansari previously served on the Natural Resources and Oversight and Government Reform committees.
Restoring tax credits and reversing tariffs are Democratic priorities, with Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Phoenix, pledging to reverse Medicaid cuts threatening care. Democrats also aim to lower costs for housing, childcare, and transportation.
Defeating retired NFL place kicker Jay Feely in the 1st District, first-time winner Amish Shah, D-Phoenix, knocked on over 28,000 doors and promised to focus on 'daily kitchen table type of issues' impacting families.
Legislation prohibiting members of Congress from trading stocks could reduce corruption, Ansari said. With their House and Senate majority, Democrats view this as a real opportunity to pass policies helping Americans in tangible ways.
