Based on a decision of the Federal Court of Sergipe, Aracaju will have to return an area of 20.78 km², about 11.4% of its territory, to the border city São Cristóvão. The land was allegedly “taken” by the state capital after illegal boundary changes by the 1989 state Constitution and a 1999 Constitutional Amendment.
