On Thursday, a historic manuscript map of the Mason-Dixon Line sold for $950,000 at an auction in Asheville, North Carolina, after a brief bidding war.
Surveyed in 1768 by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, the map settled a border dispute between Maryland and Pennsylvania before becoming synonymous with divisions fueling the American Civil War.
Lauren Brunk of Brunk Auctions reported that 45 bidders battled for just under three minutes, though the document fell short of the hoped-for $1.2 million high estimate.
The buyer requested anonymity for now, concluding the high-stakes auction for the rare document and its transfer to private ownership.
Late publisher Malcolm Forbes previously outbid the Library of Congress for the map in 1982, paying $360,000, establishing its provenance as one of America's most historically significant documents.
