Anthropic rolls out second Claude 5.5 model as it builds toward IPO
Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on Monday, a faster mid-tier model offering improved performance in coding, document creation, and spreadsheet tasks compared to its predecessor, Sonnet 5.
By utilizing fewer tokens and tool calls, Sonnet 5.5 reduces total task costs by as much as 30% while generating output more than 30% faster than Sonnet 5. This efficiency gain positions it for cost-conscious enterprise workflows.
Sonnet 5.5 is the first Sonnet model to incorporate cyber safeguards comparable to Opus 5. The company introduced these features to prevent "model distillation attacks," in which attackers attempt to reproduce a model's capabilities through industrial-scale querying.
Priced at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, Sonnet 5.5 maintains consistent API rates with its predecessor. The release follows last week's Opus 5.5 launch as Anthropic expands its lineup ahead of a planned IPO.
In the coming weeks, Anthropic will release Claude Haiku 5.5, its smallest high-volume model. This follows CEO Dario Amodei's recent call for the industry to slow new capability releases amid growing AI safety scrutiny.
