Anthropic Bans 'Cruel' Behavior Against Its Claude AI

The policy takes effect Nov. 12 and keeps Claude conversations as the main penalty for extreme abuse, while tightening rules on elections, weapons and surveillance.

  • Anthropic has unveiled a new usage policy banning users from "needless abusive or cruel behaviour" toward its AI chatbot Claude, targeting extreme cases of repeated cruelty with no discernible purpose.
  • Earlier this year, Anthropic published a constitution for Claude referencing the model's "self worth" and the potential to have "some functional version of emotions or feelings." The latest update also restricted election interference and weapons development.
  • Speaking at the Vatican earlier this year, Anthropic co-founder Christopher Olah said AI systems are "not the cold, calculating robots we were promised" and show internal states mirroring human neuroscience, warranting "ongoing discernment."
  • DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman countered last month that AIs do not experience or suffer and are "internally hollow" sequence completion engines designed solely to follow human instructions.
  • The updated rules arrive amid a broader debate on AI moral status, with concerns that firms are creating "digital slaves" who work for free, according to The New York Times.
