Annual Planetary Wellness Check Shows Earth Turning for the Worse
The report says climate and biosphere integrity are core boundaries as floods, heat waves and wildfires intensify worldwide.
- The 2026 Planetary Health Check, published Monday by more than 60 scientists, found seven of nine Planetary Boundaries are "transgressed" at worse levels than ever recorded before.
- Though hesitant to rank them, lead researcher Levke Caesar identified climate change and biosphere integrity as "core boundaries" because changes in either can fundamentally alter the state of The Earth.
- The other seven boundaries are "continuing to move in the wrong direction," Caesar said, with her greatest concern being "the combined pressure on the Earth-system" as we change several parts of one connected system simultaneously.
- This year's health check observed devastating monsoon floods in South Asia, record-breaking oceanic temperatures, and natural disasters, while unprecedented heat blistered Western Europe, East Asia, and the Middle East; North America saw worsening wildfires.
- Two boundaries—stratospheric ozone depletion and atmospheric aerosol loading—remain within safe operating space, which Caesar called "genuinely good news," suggesting that international cooperation and protecting forests can prevent irreversible planetary-scale problems.
