Urn with Anita Mui’s Ashes Missing From Lantau Monastery as Family Appeals for Help
The family offered a HK$50,000 reward as police said the missing urn case has had no arrest or ransom demand.
The urn containing the ashes of late Hong Kong Cantopop star Anita Mui Yim-fong has been missing from Po Lin Monastery for three months, prompting her family to issue a public appeal for information on Saturday, what would have been her 63rd birthday.
Fans visiting Lantau Island discovered the urn missing on July 18 after noticing loose screws on the compartment door, then alerted the family, who subsequently lodged a police report with authorities.
Police have made "no progress" in the investigation, causing the family "immense distress," while Anita's brother, Peter Mui Kai Ming, offered a HK$50,000 reward for information leading to the urn's recovery.
Fan club Mui Nation described the incident as "extremely absurd and contrary to ethics and morality," urging the columbarium's management to review security lapses and calling for a thorough police investigation.
The incident follows the August death of Mui's mother, Tam Mei Kam, at age 102, as the family navigates compounded personal challenges; Peter was reportedly excluded from the funeral last month.
