Android Strengthens Scam Defenses for Calls and Texts

Google’s new opt-in protections use Gemini AI to flag suspicious links and messages, and the company said it already blocks 5 million suspected scams monthly.

  • On Wednesday, Google announced new Android security features, including an optional 'Enhanced protection mode' for Google Messages that uses Gemini AI to warn users about deceptive messages.
  • The feature leverages Private AI Compute to encrypt and process user data in a secure space, allowing cloud-based Gemini models to evaluate message context and identify scammer intent quickly.
  • Opting in adds a UI speed bump for links from unknown contacts, while on-device Gemini Nano models inspect real-time web signals to flag malicious new domains even if not yet cataloged.
  • Additionally, Android will block apps from silently enabling call forwarding to prevent passcode theft, and automatically hide sensitive information during screen-sharing in Chrome and WebView.
  • Google is expanding scam-detection notifications globally, partnering with manufacturers including Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and HONOR to bring protections to hundreds of millions of devices later this year.
