Electric Charge: Petrol Giant Plugs $225m Into EV Deal
The purchase will add more than 1,000 charging bays and lift Ampol’s network to 1,425 bays across more than 400 sites.
On Thursday, fuel retailer Ampol announced it agreed to acquire 100 per cent of Evie Networks for $225 million, expanding its footprint in Australia's public electric vehicle charging market.
Surging EV adoption, now exceeding 25 per cent of new car sales in Australia, prompted the acquisition as retailers face mounting pressure to scale fast-charging infrastructure rapidly.
The acquisition adds more than 1,000 charging bays to Ampol's AmpCharge network, creating a combined platform of about 1,425 bays across more than 400 sites. Evie Charging chief executive Chris Mills said locations were built with expansion capacity.
Pending Australian Competition and Consumer Commission approval, the deal is expected to complete in the first half of 2027, with the combined business targeting A$30 million in annualised earnings within three years.
Ampol managing director Matt Halliday said the acquisition positions the company to "capture growth" as charging demand surges, solidifying its standing alongside Tesla and Chargefox as a leading public charging operator.
