Amit Shah Flags Off India's First LNG Train - Know All About It
Indian Railways said the converted train can replace about 40% of diesel and cut annual fuel costs by Rs 23.9 lakh for an 8-coach rake.
The Ahmedabad Railway Division launched the first LNG-powered train, integrating an LNG-diesel dual-fuel system into two Driving Power Cars to promote cleaner rail transportation.
Indian Railways converted two Driving Power Cars, each with a capacity of 1,400 HP, to replace up to around 40 per cent of diesel and reduce NOx emissions.
More than 2,000 kilometres of field trials confirmed performance, with each DPC featuring an LNG tank capacity of around 2,200 litres providing fuel for around 444 km daily.
Adopting LNG-based fuel reduces operating costs because LNG is cheaper than diesel, delivering significant financial savings for Indian Railways fleet operations.
The dual-fuel system maintains conventional engine performance while allowing the engine to switch between LNG and diesel depending on fuel availability, ensuring operational flexibility.
