Americans’ drinking remains at record low: Poll
Only 54% of U.S. adults said they ever drink alcohol, Gallup said, as record-low drinking and concern about health risks continued to rise.
- Alcohol consumption in America has reached its lowest level in nearly 90 years, with only 54% of Americans 18 and older reporting they drink, according to Gallup's July survey. This matches last year's record low, down from 65% a decade ago.
- Increased awareness of health risks appears to be driving this decline, as 86% of Americans report hearing about recent studies on alcohol's long-term effects. More than half now believe drinking is "bad for health," compared with less than 30% a decade ago.
- Declines span all age groups and both genders, with consumption dropping significantly among Republicans and Independents. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports 44% of drinkers engaged in binge drinking in the past month, while 36% prefer beer.
- Dr. Joshua Septimus at Houston Methodist warns some individuals may be substituting high-potency cannabis for alcohol, describing medical knowledge of long-term cannabis impacts as a "black hole." This concern complicates the public health narrative around declining drinking.
- Whether this decline represents a lasting trend or a one-time reaction remains uncertain, according to Gallup's Lydia Saad. Political messaging may influence patterns differently across demographics, requiring further investigation to clarify long-term consumption trajectories.
